This area north of Pokhara offers some
of he most dramatic close-up views of some of the
highest and most beautiful mountains in the world. The
abrupt variation in altitude found here is astonishing.
From the Pokhara airstrip at (850m), the summit of
Machhapuchare (6993m) is less than 20miles away, with no
intervening ranges to spoil the view. In fact the views
along the whole of the trek are superb.
Due to this incredible altitudinal range and unusual
geographical and climatic mix, walking in this area is a
naturalists dream. Also the return trail of the trek is
one of the most historical trading routes between India
and Tibet in the whole Himalaya, and a major pilgrimage
route. As well as the Gurungs and Magars (backbone of
the famous Gurkha regiment) that inhabit the area we
shall meet traders and both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. |
