Annapurna Circuit Trek

In 1950, Annapurna was the first of the eight thousand meter peaks to be climbed. During the expedition the leader, French mountaineer Maurice Herzog, made a desperate hike down to Manang from his party’s base camp at Tilicho in search of food, only to be sent back starving and empty handed. Now even the Managis warmly welcome tourists. Traditional Nepali Bhattis have evolved hereabout into sophisticated and comfortable trekkers’ lodges offering varied menus, private rooms and hot showers, with all the environmental, cultural and ecological consequences that these demand.

From the logistical and acclimatization point of view it makes the good sense to undertake this circuit in a counter clockwise direction starting at a Beshishar or Gorkha. I recommend traveling to the town of Gorkha from Kathmandu as most people do. This will halve your time spent suffering in a Nepalese bus and give you a peaceful first few days walk through isolated rural

countryside. You should be able to arrange to arrive from Kathmandu with sufficient time to visit the splendid Gorkha Durbar before setting off into the valley of Darondi khola. It was from this sanctuary atop a hill immediately above Gorkha’s main square that Prithivi Narayan Shah sailed forth in the 18th century to begin his successful camping to unity Nepal.
